Mary Charteris

Biography

Mary Charteris has been making her mark in the fashion world for many years now. An old family friend of Isabella Blow, Mary formed a strong bond with the international style icon and was somewhat taken under her wing. At age 14 Mary was modelling for her on Tatler shoots, was taken to lavish parties and introduced to numerous creative and influential people in the industry whilst also enjoying fun time alone with Isabella having midnight feasts and being mischievous.

It was through her relationship with Isabella that Mary started working for milliner Philip Treacy. She was very young at the time, but being a mature teenager Mary gained a wealth of experience and a true lifelong friend in Philip. Even now whenever he needs someone to model his creations before fashion week or for a photo shoot he will call upon Mary who will then sit for him for hours gossiping with him, listening to music and eating sweets while things are pinned to her head.

Having grown up with Daphne Guinness as her Aunt has had a tremendous effect on Mary and her eye for fashion. She has borrowed clothes from Daphne since her early teens and describes her wardrobe as “being like a piece of artwork” and “stepping into another world”. Daphne has been a real inspiration to Mary and regularly goes to fashion shows with her trying to absorb her wealth of knowledge and creative flair for her own plans to be a designer in the future.

Mary is currently studying at the London College of fashion and previous to this studied at Parsons School of Design in Paris. She has completed a variety of courses to someday help her to fulfil her dream of being a lingerie and swimwear designer with her own boutique store. In the meantime Mary is a fashion assistant for Leith Clark, the chief editor for Lula Magazine which she very much enjoys. Also as a way of logging all of her design ideas and inspiring bits and pieces Mary regularly updates her blog Talking Faithful (http://www.talkingfaithful.blogspot.com).

When Mary lived in New York for a short time she worked with designers such as Thakoon and Jason Wu during their shows at Fashion Week which led to her hosting a party for Thakoon this spring in London. Whilst in New York Mary met and became friends with Jennifer Eymere the editor of super-cool Jalouse Magazine. This led to her modelling in the Jalouse calendar 2011 in which her shot wearing Louis Vuitton jewellery gained considerable press attention.

Other modelling work to date includes a huge profile piece recently for Jalouse Magazine with her boyfriend Robbie from the band The Big Pink, The New Look Jeans campaign, Markus Lupfer, Lulu Frost Campaign, The Village Bicycle look book, UK Vogue, US Vogue, Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue, Figaro Madame, Olivia Von Halle campaign, Max Studio campaign, Jigsaw for YOU Magazine, Purple Magazine, ES Magazine

Mary also has other strings to her bow. She is a very keen DJ and plays out, in and around London to packed crowds. Typically this has been for fashion parties and corporate parties, given her background, however after going on tour with her boyfriends band last year she has been playing out with him in more cool east end parties and more recently for the Jalouse Rocks Festival in Paris. When on tour with “The Big Pink” in 2010 she was assistant to their tour manager which involved her coordinating press interviews, managing the logistics of all promotional activity and even trained to be a stage light operator for their live shows.

In February this year Mary had a small role in short film called “Candy” for the BBC, produced by Partisan Films and directed by Kinga Burza, it was aired in June and received well. Fashion designer Markus Lupfer chose Mary to take part in a mocumentary film for his resort collection which also featured Sadie Frost, Florence Welch, Gary Card, Valentine Fillol-Cordier and Margo Stilley. Mary hopes to explore this side of her career as well as planned presenting for Vogue.com later this summer.

Mary can now be booked for DJ Sets.
